Trust and transparency key to future business success

The ICO has launched a new code of practice for all UK organisations that collect and use customer data. This is the first guidance note since Elizabeth Denham took over from the previous ICO Christopher Graham.
It explains how businesses must comply with the existing Data Protection Act and the upcoming GDPR which comes into force in 2018. It calls for organisations to become more transparent with consumers about how their data is being used. This comes off the back of ICO research which reveals that one in four people don’t trust companies to look after their personal data responsibly. It suggests one area that can be improved are privacy notices on websites. The research shows that the majority of organisations don’t update their statement regularly. However, in accordance with DPA and GDPR it should be reviewed as a business develops its processes and procedures.
